href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/110\/28\/E2602.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global patterns of terrestrial vertebrate diversity and conservation<\/a>&#8220;, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2013. Seeing a need for more widely accessible maps of where the many species on our planet live, the BiodiveristyMapping.org site was born. The first maps were for salamanders and other amphibians, created while sitting in the <a href=\"https:\/\/fontanalib.org\/franklin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Macon County Public Library<\/a> in Franklin, NC. That also happens to be in the center of global salamander diversity!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4; color: #000000;\">Maps have been developed by Clinton Jenkins, now based at Florida International University in the <a href=\"https:\/\/case.fiu.edu\/about\/directory\/profiles\/jenkins-clinton.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Earth and Environment<\/a>. Advice and suggestions came from many colleagues, including Joe Sexton (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joesexton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">terraPulse<\/a>), Rob Dunn (<a href=\"https:\/\/robdunnlab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NCSU<\/a>), Stuart Pimm (<a href=\"https:\/\/thepimmgroup.org\/stuart-pimm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duke University<\/a>), Kyle Van Houtan (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montereybayaquarium.org\/newsroom\/staff-bios\/kyle-van-houtan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monterey Bay Aquarium<\/a>), Lucas Joppa (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/lujoppa\/?from=http%3A%2F%2Fresearch.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fpeople%2Flujoppa%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Research<\/a>), F\u00e9lix Pharand-Deschenes (<a href=\"https:\/\/globaia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Globa\u00efa<\/a>), and Nick Haddad (<a href=\"https:\/\/nickhaddadlab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michigan State University<\/a>). Producing the biodiversity maps would not have been possible without the enormous efforts contributed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IUCN<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natureserve.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NatureServe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BirdLife International<\/a>, and the USGS in their ongoing efforts to map the individual distributions of the world&#8217;s species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
